Marilyn Tan’s story is rather unorthodox, as she worked as a family lawyer before deciding to make a shift to designing jewelry in the early 1990s, taking it up as a hobby. Soon after, Marilyn has developed her signature aesthetic that relies on bold material and shape combinations to create stunning pieces that make a subtle, yet clear statement with their characteristic sleek elegance and eccentricity.

It wasn’t long before the designer’s work caught the eye of department store buyers in Singapore. From then on, her eponymous jewelry label has been on the rise, bringing her acclaim and a loyal customer following spread across the globe.

It does take a woman of the world to truly understand what today’s strong, confident, and independent ladies need and want. Being one of them, Marilyn draws inspiration from her own life experiences, especially her travels. Bonsai trees and bamboo forests of China inspired the Frangipani collection, while the sparkling shimmer of the Galaxy Blue lineup reflects the beauty of the Milky Way on a clear night in Lake Titicaca in Peru.

Marilyn Tan uses .925 silver, 18k white and yellow gold, bronze, as well as other metals and one-of-a-kind precious and semi-precious stones in crafting her unique designs. And whether it’s used to add pizzazz to a casual outfit, or make an evening ensemble look even more glamorous, Marilyn Tan Jewellery and the designer’s hip MTJ line prove to be a go-to choice for fashionistas with a penchant for artful style with modern flair.

What’s even more remarkable about the label is the designer’s active collaboration with “Kumnit Thmey,” which is a social enterprise providing victims of human trafficking a chance to earn a living as artisans.
